Prelude to Nyama Choma

When we first arrived in Maji Moto we were greeted with open arms and during our welcome ceremony were even treated to a very special dish of grilled goat. Ever since that first meal our students have been intrigued to learn about the life cycle that takes place within an agricultural society—especially when it comes to how a goat goes from the field to becoming nyama choma (grilled meat). Several of our hosts in Maji Moto collaborated in organizing a viewing of the end of a goat’s life, giving students the chance to see this process in action. Although the process as a whole was difficult to watch at times, it was a truly once in a lifetime experience that gave everyone much more perspective as to where some of our food in Maji Moto comes from and what it takes to get it.
